Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded to compress it?
No. The tool runs FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly directly in your browser, so the video is read from your disk and processed in memory on your own machine. It never touches a server, which makes it safe for private or confidential footage.
How much smaller will my video get?
It depends on the source. Footage straight from a phone or camera is usually lightly compressed and often drops by 60–80% on the Balanced preset with little visible difference. A video that has already been compressed — for example one exported from another tool — has less room left and may shrink only slightly. Dropping the resolution saves the most.
Why is the first run slow to start?
The first compression downloads the roughly 32MB FFmpeg engine. Your browser caches it, so subsequent videos start immediately. After that, speed depends on your device and the length of the video rather than your connection.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit, but because everything runs in your browser's memory, very large files (over about 2GB) may fail on lower-end devices. If a big file fails, try lowering the resolution first.
What size do I need for WhatsApp, email or Discord?
WhatsApp caps video at 16MB, Gmail attachments at 25MB, and Discord at 10MB on the free tier. The Smaller file preset combined with 720p will get most short clips under all three.
Will compressing reduce the quality?
Some, yes — this is lossy compression, which is how the file gets meaningfully smaller. The presets are tuned so the Balanced setting is hard to tell apart from the original at normal viewing size. The preview plays the actual compressed result, so you can check before downloading.
Can I use this to download videos from TikTok or Instagram?
No. This tool compresses video files you already have on your device. It does not download or fetch video from other platforms.
