Frequently asked questions
How is HRA exemption calculated?
The exemption is the LEAST of three figures: the actual HRA received; 50% of basic salary for metro cities (40% for non-metros); and rent paid minus 10% of basic salary. Whatever is smallest is your exempt amount.
Which cities count as metros for HRA?
Only Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai are treated as metro cities for HRA, giving a 50% of basic limit. Every other city, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune, uses the 40% non-metro limit.
Can I claim HRA exemption under the New Tax Regime?
No. The HRA exemption is only available under the Old Tax Regime. If you opt for the New Regime, your entire HRA is taxable.
