Frequently asked questions

What is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum amount of net wealth a Muslim must hold before Zakat becomes due. It equals the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Using the silver value gives a lower threshold, so more people qualify — it is the common cautious choice.

Which assets are counted for Zakat?

Zakat is due on cash and bank balances, gold and silver, investments and shares, business inventory and stock, and money you have lent to others. From this total you subtract debts and bills that are due. Personal-use items like your home, car and clothing are not counted.

How much Zakat do I pay?

If your net zakatable wealth stays at or above Nisab for one lunar (Hijri) year, Zakat is paid at 2.5% of that net wealth. If your wealth is below Nisab, no Zakat is due for that year.
