What an XML sitemap is for

An XML sitemap is a machine-readable list of the URLs you want search engines to crawl, along with optional metadata like last-modified date. It doesn't guarantee indexing, but it helps crawlers discover pages — especially on large sites, new sites with few backlinks, or pages buried deep in the structure.

Submit it in Google Search Console and reference it from robots.txt with a Sitemap: line.

The format and limits

A sitemap follows the sitemaps.org schema:

Limits per file: 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. Past that, split into multiple sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index file. Use fully-qualified, canonical URLs and consistent http/https and www usage.

Common mistakes

  • Including non-canonical, redirected, noindex, or 404 URLs — only list final, indexable pages.
  • Letting lastmod lie; Google distrusts sitemaps where every date is "today".
  • Forgetting to update the sitemap when content changes.
  • Over-weighting <priority> and <changefreq> — Google largely ignores both, so don't obsess over them.
  • Not referencing the sitemap from robots.txt or Search Console.

Where do I put the sitemap?

Upload it to your site, commonly at https://example.com/sitemap.xml, then reference it in robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console.

Are changefreq and priority required?

No. They are optional hints and search engines largely treat them as advisory. A clean list of valid <loc> URLs is the most important part.
